Choosing a Domain Name
A domain name is a unique address that is used on the Internet. It is what you see in the address bar after the “www.” in your web browser, and what comes after the ‘@ ‘sign in an email address. It is one of the first things you would need to decide on before planning to launch your website. The name should be such that it reflects your site or business.
Some of the key points to remember while choosing domain names are:
Easy to Spell/Remember: Your name should be easy to spell and remember, even if someone just hears it once in a conversation.
Avoid using existing popular names: You want to be able to dominate the search engine results page for your name, so it is best to avoid names which are already very popular.
Long names are equally good: Your name need not necessarily be short, easy to memorize longer names are equally good.
Avoid hyphens: It is best to avoid domain names with hyphens as people tend to forget to include the hyphen. As a result, they might get directed to a different website.
Keep It Simple: Keep your domain name as uncomplicated as possible in order to make it easy for people to type it in their address bar.
Reflects the context/content: It is very important to have a domain name that reflects your site or business. In the modern world of Internet, your website is the first place people turn to for information.
Don’t Copy: Do not copy someone else’s domain name just because it is successful. It might lead to copyright violations. Instead come up with your own unique ideas.
There are also many tools available online which can help you save time when it comes to choosing a domain name and/or to identify the available domain names. Some of these popular tools include,
• Dot-o-mator: is a web tool that suggests site names based on prefixes and suffixes that you’ve entered.
• Domize: is a search engine that you can use to rapidly check the availability of domains.
• BustAName: is a robust and feature-packed domain finder that uses linguistic data to help you search domains.
A domain name is by which people will start knowing and recognizing your business online and so having a clear, memorable and trustworthy business name is essential because when people think of your website, they'll think of it by name.
