How to Use Lists on Twitter
In the previous podcast I mentioned adding people to a list on Twitter. A few people asked me what the benefits were of adding people to a list.
In show #3 I talk about how Twitter lists are a great way to prioritize your news feeds, keep track of the latest news and cut down the noise from your Twitter feed. You can list both the people that you follow on Twitter, and those that you don't.
Then when you open the list the only tweets you will only see the tweets from the people that are on that list.
There are a variety of different lists you could set up. Here are a few ideas:
- People from an event you have been to
- Daily news in your industry
- Your clients
- Keeping an eye on your competitors (you might want to keep this one private!)
- Blogs you follow
- People you met on a course you are doing
- People you met in a group you are in
- Leaders in your industry
Key things to note about Twitter Lists:
- Can have up to 20 lists
- 500 people in each lists
- Lists can be both public and private
- Create your own lists or subscribe to other people's lists
- If you add someone to a public list they will be notified
- List names can be no longer than 25 characters
- List names cannot start with a number

Starting Conversations on Twitter
It can be a bit frightening when you are first on Twitter to reach out to people and strike up a conversation. In show #2 I talk through a variety of ways to start those conversations -whether you are responding to something someone else posted or if you are initiating the conversation yourself.
Here is a list of some of the ideas covered in the show. Each point is elaborated further with additional ideas.
- Retweet other people's posts – either with a question/comment, or without. (Listen to my word of warning on retweeting links.)
- Answer a question that has been tweeted.
- Make a comment about something that has been tweeted.
- Favourite someone’s tweet.
- Jump into a conversation – use the search or a hashtag. (Again, a word of warning here.)
- Thank people for retweets
- Welcome new followers.
- Use their bio to give you something to talk about.
- Add people to a list. (I teach you how to create Twitter lists in this video.)
- Send a Follow Friday tweet (Make sure you don't make this mistake!)
- Ask a question.
- Give someone a compliment.
These are just a few of the ways to start connecting with people on Twitter.

Using Twitter for Business
Twitter would have to be one of my favourite, if not my favourite, social platform. I think a lot of people miss out on the benefits of Twitter, as it is a bit of a learning curve when you start out. It is a lot easier to start a Facebook page, than get started on Twitter, because most people are already familiar with the look and feel of Facebook.
It is well worth the time it takes to learn to use Twitter.
Here are a few reasons why I really like it:
- I get more than 2 times the traffic to my blog from Twitter, than I do from Facebook.
- More of my clients find me on Twitter.
- I find building relationships and starting conversations easier on Twitter. Facebook is great for people you already know – but in business we are always looking for new people to meet.
- You can automate more of what goes out onto Twitter. Don't get me wrong, you still need to show up live to actually connect with people, but scheduling out past posts, for example, is a great way to get more traffic to you website.
Using Twitter lists makes working on Twitter a easier. It helps cut out a lot of the noise. If you are not using them already this video will walk you through how to set them up.
